Improved product quality from 'unusable' to reliable in two releases. Du ring this period, the customer base grew from 4 to 25, and company revenues grew from $1M to $4.5M, largely due to increased product confidence. Moved bug tracking from p aper to an online database. Responded to immediate development requirements in suppor t of sales as required. Began development of formal, automated test suites. Hired alm ost 30 new developers and managers without using external recruiters, with only one l oss. Responsible for most product marketing and release planning work. As a technical consultant to OEM sales and marketing, assisted in the sale of Ingres to major OEM partners, including IBM, NCR, Tandem, HP, Bull, and SystemHouse among ma ny others. Responsible for technical sales presentations, product feasibility studies , architecture proposals and documents, development of account strategies, teaching o f junior staff, and consulting to entire marketing and sales organization world-wide. Prepared and delivered briefings for OEM clients' internal and external sales functi ons. Wrote collateral for joint marketing use, analyzed competitive offerings. Princi pal technical contributor in the selection of Ingres over Sybase for internal use by HP world-wide. Continued participation in Ingres' Engineering design and oversight co mmittees. Requested speaker at industry conferences.

PRINCIPAL PROGRAM MANAGER
Responsible for delivery of major INGRES product releases. Responsible for coordinati on of all aspects of product release across the entire corporation, initiation and me diation of conflict and dependency resolution, documentation and specification of pro duct and program content, producing and maintaining the product implementation docume nts and schedules, chairing and documenting the release status and issue meetings, an d reporting progress and status to upper management, escalating issues when necessary .

SALES CONSULTANT (Special Assignment)
Designated full-time to special sales support team for the fourth fiscal quarter. Res ponsible for directing the sales strategy and support for multiple large sales opport unities, both domestic and international. Successfully closed over $2M worth of busin ess in 4 months, mostly in Europe. Showed "the skills of a senior salesman."

MANAGER OF GATEWAY DEVELOPMENT and
ACTING DIRECTOR, IBM SYSTEMS AND GATEWAYS
Responsible for all INGRES Release 6 Database Gateway development. Personally archite cted the gateway approach and designed all but two of the fifteen gateways under deve lopment. Hired and managed the implementation team of eight people. Coordinated with outside companies' development efforts using my designs, and worked with internal dev elopment groups to support these products. Designed, developed and delivered develope r, end-user, and sales training for the products. During this period, I was also the Database Interoperability Architect, responsible for ensuring that all INGRES product s operated correctly with all gateways, regardless of DBMS, processor, network, and O /S architecture. Designed solutions and resolved problems as necessary. Worked extens ively on the designs for INGRES/Net (OSI RDA-based DBMS interconnection) and INGRES/S tar (distributed database manager). In addition to the gateway team, I assumed respon sibility for the IBM mainframe environment development and testing staff when their m anager stepped down. These eleven engineers were developing and porting the INGRES DB MS and tools to MVS and VM, and were responsible for MVS,VM and all gateway testing. At this time I had ongoing direct management responsibility for at least 18 engineers . Helped found the SQL Access Group (SAG) and was its first secretary.

PRINCIPAL MEMBER OF THE TECHNICAL STAFF
Responsible for porting the newest INGRES release (6.0) from VMS to MVS. As one of th ree team members, was sole architect and implementor of the I/O subsystem. Product wa s ready for market as soon as allowed. Was also sole MVS systems programmer during th is and later periods, responsible for specifying, installing, tuning, maintaining, co nfiguring, etc. of all MVS/XA products, including MVS/XA, VTAM, IMS, CICS, DB2, NCP, etc. on an IBM 4381 and Amdahl 5860.

PROJECT LEADER/PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT
Staffed and lead a team of five responsible for all aspects of the MVS/XA implementat ion on Amdahl's VP line of supercomputers. Architected and designed the hardware and software implementation, and coded 40% of the required software. Coordinated systems maintenance, documentation, packaging, tuning, systems training, and future product p lanning for all of the VP software and some of the hardware, both IBM compatible and Fujitsu proprietary. Negotiated extensively with Fujitsu in Japan on product issues.

PRINCIPAL RESEARCHER
Worked with Teknowledge in Palo Alto for 18 months to explore AI applications for use within Amdahl. Goal was to identify uses of AI for Amdahl products, support groups, marketing, and sales. Successfully developed a configurator for the 4705 communicati ons controller. Helped port LISP and Prolog to 370 systems. Successfully completed Te knowledge's six month apprenticeship (T3) program, and learned LISP, Prolog, and nume rous AI shells. Was to be transferred to the MITI Fifth Generation project in Japan.

PROJECT LEADER
Lead a team of fifteen engineers in the analysis of MVS/XA. This group successfully m et its charter of determining the architecture of XA prior to its availability and fo rmulating a corporate strategy to respond to the product. When MVS/XA was released, t he group spent six weeks of intensive effort, developing over 1200 pages of material, which confirmed and extended our earlier work, and determined the corporation's comp etitive response.

SYSTEMS SOFTWARE DEVELOPER
Sole architect, designer and author of Amdahl's MVS/SPA product (MVS/SP3 XMS instruct ion set simulation), and was responsible for initial support of MVS/SEA under MVS/SP3 . I designed, developed, documented, and tested MVS/SPA in six months, a task that th e software development organization had estimated at five person years in three phase s over 18 months. Instruction level performance was within 5% of IBM's microcoded har dware assist.

REGIONAL SYSTEMS ENGINEER (SALES)
Based in Stockholm, I was responsible for both pre- and post-sales support in Scandin avia and South Africa. This included pre-sales presentations to customers, determinin g sales strategy, responding to RFPs and RFIs, and pre-installation planning and supp ort. Also served as area hardware and software support specialist.

SENIOR STAFF SYSTEMS ENGINEER/FIELD ENGINEER
Responsible for last-line (fifth level) hardware and software problem determination a nd resolution for almost everything that ran on Amdahl systems. This included MVT, M FT, SVS, MVS, ACP and VS1 and all of their subsystems. Developed fixes for problems e ncountered, both hardware and software. Developed and delivered internal and customer training on new products. Promoted six levels during this period (4 years).
