Home - Enterprise Services - Course Development - Standard Courses - Solaris™ 8 Kernel Debugging and Troubleshooting
Course Description: This course provides attendees with the necessary background and knowledge to determine the root cause of a problem, and to correct the problem or determine a suitable workaround. Kernel panic dumps and kernel hangs are covered in great detail. The course material is written for Solaris™ 8, and covers in-depth usage of the tools provided with the system. It also covers troubleshooting of hardware, boot, operating system, device driver, and application problems. Networking and disk related issues are discussed, in addition to performance considerations. The course largely consists of practical lab exercises.
Who Can Benefit: Solaris™ 8 Kernel Debugging and TroubleShooting is primarily aimed at kernel and device driver developers and support personnel. Attendees should already have a thorough knowledge of Solaris™, (or some other version of UNIX). Experienced system administrators and application programmers can also benefit from this course. The course can be of use to field and headquarters support personnel, system administrators, kernel and device driver developers, and technical staff responsible for troubleshooting, developing, tuning and supporting Solaris™ 8.
Major Topics Include:
Prerequisites: Attendees are expected to possess basic UNIX system administration skills. Some knowledge of the C programming language and/or an assembler language is helpful, but not necessary. While the course is taught using the Sun Solaris™ environment, specific knowledge of Solaris™ is not required. Developers who have taken a UNIX Internals class and/or a device driver class will particularly benefit, as will administrators who have taken a majority of Sun Microsystems system administration courses. Attendees should be able to perform basic UNIX system administration, and have an understanding of basic UNIX I/O and operating system concepts and system calls.
